When usage billing meets cutoff testing

Usage meters rarely close at the same second as your ledger. That lag is fine until cutoff testing asks whether December usage landed in December revenue. Teams that treat the meter warehouse as informal data discover the gap mid-inquiry.

Document the lag as a design fact

If invoices generate on day four with a one-day data delay, write that into the control narrative. Auditors prefer a named lag over a silent reconciling item.

Pick one bridge report

Maintain a single bridge from meter events to billed amounts for the periods under audit. Competing “quick exports” from different analysts create contradictory samples.

Test the exception path

Manual usage adjustments are where cutoff breaks. Sample them deliberately. Module 4 of the Walkthrough Lab includes a messy adjustment set on purpose.
